Paul Richardson practised at Trinity Chambers, Newcastle, between 1987 and 1998.  He then became an associate with Laurence Keenan in the Isle of Man from 1998 to 2000.  In 2000 Paul and his family moved to Guernsey.  He subsequently qualified as an advocate and was called to the Guernsey Bar in 2003, whilst working with another local law firm where he became a partner in 2003.  In April 2007, Paul, together with colleagues, Mark Ferbrache and Peter Atkinson, founded AFR Advocates.

Cases of interest include:

Acting for cell companies against former directors and officers. After a four week trial before Jurats, judgement was given in favour of SPL for circa £24m.

Acting for Robert Tchenguiz in relation to complex trust and financial litigation.

Acting for Unite in Royal Court litigation in respect of changes to States of Guernsey pension scheme in one of the first and largest ‘pension scheme’ cases in Guernsey.

Paul Richardson acted for the liquidator of a Guernsey reinsurance company. Claims were for circa US$50m.  The matter was technically very complex, involving four jurisdictions - the States of Pennsylvania and New York, the Caymans and Guernsey.  Parallel litigation was under way in New York and Guernsey.  The case was settled.

Paul represented RBSI in a US$7m counter-claim against a former client arising out of the application of the US Patriot Act.  This was a very complicated matter concerning conflict of laws and in the application of law to Internet Gambling.  The matter was successfully settled for RBSI.

Galaxy International
Paul Richardson was instructed in an application brought by Ladbrokes PLC to wind up Galaxy International Limited, a company owning significant gaming and bingo businesses in South Africa.  The matter was successfully settled, followed by litigation over costs which raised important principles as to the recoverability of non-Guernsey lawyers' costs and a party's obligation to consider without prejudice offers.

Mitco Realty
Litigation arising out of an agreement regarding the sale of a substantial property portfolio in Guernsey.  Paul Richardson was instructed by the client in a claim for circa £1m against an AIM listed company with a property portfolio in excess of £1 billion.

Litigation arising out of a dispute between the directors of a Fund and its previous administrators and managers, worth in excess of £2.5 million.

Paul Richardson has been instructed by the liquidators of a company to give expert evidence of Guernsey law in a complex claim against its former directors seeking damages in excess of £1 billion.

Acting for the defendant investment management company in a claim brought by a former client seeking damages in excess of £1.2 million.

Acting for beneficiaries in multi-million pound claim against trustees, corporate administrators and joint venturers.

Acting for trustees in claim against former trustees in relation to lost opportunity claim.

Acting for former trustee in claim by beneficiaries for alleged negligent investment.

Acting for Defendants in £2.2 million medical negligence claim.

Paul is instructed by the beneficiaries of a high asset value settlement in a complex breach of trust, professional negligence and conspiracy claim against a trustee, seeking damages in excess of £20 million.

Instructed in relation to a dispute brought by trustee of a large pension fund worth in excess of £25 million.

Albert Good
Paul was instructed as leader in the case of Albert Good v Credit Suisse (Guernsey) Limited, where he acted for Mr Good (the former CEO of Credit Suisse (Guernsey) Limited) in obtaining the largest unfair dismissal award ever made by the Tribunal (almost £250,000), and in the wrongful dismissal and bonus claim (seeking damages in excess of £1 million), in which he successfully sought summary judgment in part early on in the proceedings.  The proceedings eventually settled in June 2010 just prior to trial, where complex issues regarding discretionary bonuses and foreign exchange arguments were due to be heard by the Royal Court.

Paul Richardson was instructed to defend a director's disqualification application arising out of the administration of a PCC valued at £120 million.  The matter was successfully settled just prior to trial.
